A Short History of the Czech Republic

First, the Kingdom of Bohemia was a powerful state in medieval Europe. Under Charles IV, Prague became the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Later, the Habsburgs ruled the region for centuries.

In 1918, Czechoslovakia was born. However, Nazi occupation and then communism followed. In 1989, the peaceful Velvet Revolution ended communist rule. Finally, in 1993, the country split peacefully from Slovakia.

Food and Beer

First, try svíčková, beef in a creamy sauce with dumplings, and roast pork with sauerkraut. Also, trdelník is sold everywhere, though it is more touristic than traditional. Of course, Czech beer is world-famous, with Pilsner born in Plzeň. Moreover, Moravia produces excellent wines.

Practical Tips

  • Use the local currency: the country uses the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro.
  • Avoid exchange booths: some offer very poor rates, so withdraw from bank ATMs.
  • Visit early: Charles Bridge is crowded by mid-morning.
  • Use public transport: Prague’s trams and metro are cheap and efficient.

Count $85 to $130 per person per day. Prague is the most expensive place, while the countryside is cheaper. Also, beer and local food are good value.

When is the best time to go?

The best period is April to October, with mild weather. May, June and September are ideal. In December, meanwhile, Christmas markets make Prague magical.

Do I need a visa?

The country is part of the Schengen Area. Many visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa. Still, always check the latest entry rules for your passport before you travel.
