Hike

The Lost City trek is one of the great jungle hikes of South America. It leads to Ciudad Perdida, an ancient city hidden in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia. The site, called Teyuna by Indigenous peoples, was built around the 8th century. In fact, it is several centuries older than Machu Picchu.

This guide to the Lost City trek covers the route, the highlights, how to prepare and practical tips.

About the Lost City

The city was built by the Tayrona people and later abandoned during the Spanish conquest. Then, the jungle covered it for centuries. In the early 1970s, looters found it, and archaeologists arrived soon after. Today, the site includes more than 200 stone terraces, plazas and stairways. However, it remains a sacred place for the Kogi, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo peoples.

Starting Point: Santa Marta

Santa Marta, founded in 1525, is one of the oldest cities in South America. It is the base for the Lost City trek. Also, it is close to beaches and Tayrona National Park. So, many travellers combine both.

The Lost City Trek Route

  1. Transfer to the trailhead: Tour operators drive you from Santa Marta to El Mamey, also called Machete Pelao. The trip takes about two to three hours.
  2. The trek: The route is about 45 km return. Most groups take four days, but five or six are also possible.
  3. The final climb: On the third day, about 1,200 stone steps lead up to the ancient city. Then, you explore the terraces with your guide.

Highlights of the Lost City Trek

  • Indigenous communities: You pass through Kogi and Wiwa villages. Also, guides explain local beliefs and traditions.
  • The ancient city: Circular terraces rise along a jungle ridge, with sweeping mountain views.
  • Rivers and pools: Every day, you can cool off in clear natural pools.
  • Jungle life: Butterflies, birds and sometimes monkeys accompany the walk.

Preparing for the Lost City Trek

The trek is moderately difficult. For example, trails are steep, muddy and very humid. In addition, you cross several rivers on foot. So, a good level of fitness helps a lot.

  • Guides are compulsory: Only licensed operators can lead groups. Moreover, the price includes meals, camps and park fees.
  • Accommodation: You sleep in simple camps with bunk beds or hammocks and mosquito nets.
  • What to bring: Pack light: quick-dry clothes, sandals for rivers, insect repellent, a torch and a rain jacket.
  • Health: Check vaccine advice, including yellow fever, before travelling.

Best Time to Do the Lost City Trek

December to March is the driest period, so trails are easier. However, it is also the busiest season. In contrast, the rainy months make rivers higher and paths muddier. Note that the site usually closes every September for a month. This allows Indigenous communities to perform cleansing ceremonies.

Respecting the Sacred Site

Teyuna is a spiritual place for its Indigenous guardians. Therefore, follow your guide’s instructions, stay on marked paths and ask before photographing people. Also, never remove stones or objects.
