Changdeokgung Palace is one of the Five Grand Palaces of Seoul. Built in the early 15th century, it was the favourite residence of many Joseon kings. Moreover, its buildings follow the shape of the hills instead of a strict grid. As a result, Changdeokgung became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.

So, this guide covers the palace, the famous Secret Garden and tips for your visit.

History of Changdeokgung

First, the palace was completed in 1405 as a second royal palace. However, it burned during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s. Then, it was rebuilt and served as the main royal residence for about 270 years. In fact, it was used by the royal family until the early 20th century.

What to See in the Palace

Donhwamun Gate

Above all, the main gate dates from the early 17th century. Also, it is one of the oldest wooden gates in Seoul.

Injeongjeon Hall

Next, this throne hall hosted coronations and state ceremonies. Moreover, its interior mixes traditional decoration with some early modern touches, such as electric lights.

Seonjeongjeon Hall

Then, here the king met his officials. Interestingly, it is the only building in the palace with a blue-tiled roof.

Daejojeon and Nakseonjae

Also, Daejojeon was the queen’s residence. Meanwhile, Nakseonjae was built in 1847 by King Heonjong. In contrast, its plain wooden buildings show a simpler, scholarly style.

Huwon, the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung

Behind the palace, moreover, the Secret Garden covers a wooded hillside with ponds and pavilions. In the past, therefore, kings came here to rest, read and write poetry.

  • Buyongji Pond: A square pond with the elegant Buyongjeong Pavilion and the two-storey Juhamnu library above it.
  • Aeryeonji Pond: A quiet pond named after the lotus flower.
  • Yeongyeongdang: A residence built in 1828 in the style of a noble’s house, without colourful paint.

Tips for Visiting Changdeokgung
