Walking trail at Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon

Sight

Nature

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a deep, winding canyon in the south of Iceland. It is about 2 km long and up to 100 metres deep. Moreover, its walls are covered in thick green moss. As a result, it is one of the most photogenic stops along the Ring Road.

So, this guide covers its formation, the walking trail, rules and practical tips.

How Fjaðrárgljúfur Formed

The rock here is very old, made of volcanic layers about two million years old. However, the canyon itself was carved much later. At the end of the last Ice Age, meltwater from a glacier poured through the area. Over thousands of years, the river cut a twisting gorge into the soft rock.

Walking the Canyon Rim

A marked trail follows the eastern edge of the canyon for about 2 km. Along the way, several viewing platforms look down into the gorge. Then, the final platform faces a waterfall at the top. In total, the walk takes about one hour return. Also, it is suitable for most visitors.

Rules and Protection

A few years ago, a famous music video brought huge crowds here. In fact, the fragile moss was damaged, and the canyon had to close for a time. So, today, always stay on the marked path and platforms. Also, never walk on the moss, because it can take decades to recover. In addition, walking in the riverbed is not allowed.

Icelandic Moss

The green carpet around the canyon is mostly woolly moss. It grows very slowly in the cool, wet climate. However, it is easily destroyed by footsteps. So, admire it from the path.

Best Time to Visit Fjaðrárgljúfur

From May to September, the moss is greenest and the trail is clear. In contrast, the path can close in winter or during the spring thaw to protect the ground. So, check before you go.

Practical Tips

  • Pay for parking: A parking fee helps maintain the site.
  • Drive carefully: The access road is partly gravel.
  • Go early or late: The light is softer and crowds are smaller.
  • Combine stops: The village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur is only a few minutes away.

Getting There

The canyon lies about 3 km off Route 1, near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. From Reykjavík, it takes about 3.5 hours by car. For road conditions, see Safetravel Iceland.
