Natural Wonder of Taroko National Park

Sight

Nature

Taroko National Park lies on the east coast of Taiwan, near the city of Hualien. In fact, its famous gorge cuts through marble cliffs hundreds of metres high. Moreover, temples, waterfalls and mountain trails make it one of Asia’s most beautiful parks. As a result, Taroko National Park is a highlight of any trip to Taiwan.

Important: a strong earthquake hit Hualien in April 2024. As a result, landslides followed, and many roads and trails in the park closed. Some areas have reopened gradually, while others remain closed. Therefore, always check the official park website before you go.

Highlights of Taroko National Park

Taroko Gorge

The Liwu River carved this deep gorge through marble over millions of years. Above all, the narrow sections near Swallow Grotto and the Tunnel of Nine Turns are spectacular. Here, moreover, cliffs rise almost vertically on both sides.

Shakadang Trail

This easy trail also follows a river with clear turquoise water. It is carved into the cliff, so you walk under overhanging rock. Also, Truku Indigenous villagers have traditionally lived along this valley.

Eternal Spring Shrine

This red shrine stands above a waterfall near the park entrance. In particular, it honours the workers who died building the Central Cross-Island Highway. Indeed, the road was carved by hand through the mountains in the 1950s.

Baiyang Waterfall Trail

This trail passes through several tunnels before reaching a waterfall. Also, the nearby Water Curtain Cave was once a famous stop. So, bring a torch for the dark sections, if the trail is open.

Xiangde Temple and Tianxiang

Deeper in the gorge, a suspension bridge leads to Xiangde Temple, with its white pagoda and statue of Guanyin. Nearby, meanwhile, Tianxiang is a small village with a hotel and restaurants. In fact, it is a good base for exploring the upper gorge.

Other Trails

Similarly, the Lushui Trail is a short forest walk with gorge views. Meanwhile, the Zhuilu Old Trail offers a dramatic cliff path high above the river. However, it requires a permit and may be affected by closures.

Best Time to Visit Taroko National Park

Spring and autumn usually bring the most pleasant weather. In contrast, summer is hot, and typhoons may strike from July to September. After heavy rain or earthquakes, trails can close for safety.
