Hike

Alishan is a mountain area in central Taiwan, famous for its forests, tea and sunrises. At around 2,200 metres, the air is cool and fresh. Moreover, giant cypress trees, a historic railway and seas of clouds make it unforgettable. As a result, it is one of Taiwan’s favourite escapes from the heat.

This guide covers the top experiences, the best trails and how to reach the mountains. It also shares practical tips for a comfortable stay.

Top Experiences in Alishan

Sunrise over the Sea of Clouds

Watching the sunrise is the highlight of any visit to Alishan. Early each morning, a short train ride takes visitors to the Zhushan viewpoint. There, the sun rises behind Yushan, the highest peak in Taiwan. On good days, a sea of clouds fills the valleys below. However, it is cold before dawn, so dress warmly.

The Alishan Forest Railway

Built during the Japanese era to carry timber, this narrow-gauge railway is now a scenic attraction. The line climbs from the plains of Chiayi through tropical, temperate and alpine forests. In addition, it uses spirals and switchbacks to gain height. Book tickets early, because trains often sell out.

Giant Trees Trail and Sister Ponds

Wooden boardwalks lead through a forest of ancient red cypress trees. In fact, some are well over a thousand years old. Along the way, you will pass the two small Sister Ponds, linked to a local legend. Then, continue to the old Sacred Tree site and quiet Shouzhen Temple.

High-Mountain Tea

Alishan’s cool, misty climate is perfect for oolong tea. So, the slopes are covered with neat green tea terraces. Many farms welcome visitors for tastings. Also, a pack of local tea makes a great souvenir.

Best Time to Visit Alishan

Each season has its charm. In March and April, cherry blossoms cover the park. Autumn and winter, on the other hand, bring clearer skies and the best sunrises. Summer is greener, but also rainier. Therefore, always check the weather and typhoon warnings.

How to Get to Alishan

Chiayi is the gateway to the mountains. First, reach Chiayi from Taipei by high-speed rail in about 1.5 hours. Then, choose one of these options.

  • By train: Take the Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi Station. The scenic ride takes a few hours.
  • By bus: Tourist shuttle buses leave from Chiayi’s high-speed rail and train stations. Also, they are usually faster than the train.
  • By car: Mountain roads are winding and often foggy. So, drive slowly and allow extra time.

Travel Tips for Alishan

  • Stay overnight: Sunrise trips start very early. Therefore, sleep in the recreation area if possible.
  • Pack layers: Nights are cold, even in summer. Also, bring a rain jacket.
  • Book ahead: Rooms and trains fill up during cherry blossom season and holidays.
  • Take it easy: The altitude is moderate. Still, walk slowly and drink plenty of water.
