Lake Titicaca, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia, is the largest lake in South America by volume and surface area. It sits at an elevation of approximately 3,812 meters (12,507 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest navigable lakes in the world. The lake covers an area of about 8,372 square kilometers (3,232 square miles). It’s renowned for its deep blue waters, cultural significance, and unique floating islands.

Lake Titicaca is considered the cradle of Andean civilization. According to Inca mythology, the first Inca king, Manco Cápac, and his sister-wife, Mama Ocllo, were born from the lake, sent by the sun god Inti to create the Inca Empire.

Best attractions of Lake Titicaca

  • Uros Floating Islands : These artificial islands are made by the Uros people from totora reeds which grow abundantly in the shallow parts of Lake Titicaca. The Uros are an indigenous people who have preserved their unique way of life despite the influx of tourism. They originally created the islands as a defensive measure to escape aggression from other tribes. Visitors can explore the islands, learn about the Uros’ unique way of life, and even take a ride on a reed boat.
    • You can take a boat tour from the port of Puno to the islands. The boat ride typically takes around 30 minutes.
    • Be aware that this has become a touristic attraction and you’ll need to bring cash purchasing crafts and tipping guides

  • Taquile Island : Known for its well-preserved culture and traditions, Taquile Island is famous for its handicrafts, particularly textiles. The island’s highest point is 4,050 meters (13,287 feet) above sea level, offering spectacular views of Lake Titicaca and the surrounding Andes mountains. The islanders have a communal way of life and offer homestays for visitors. You’ll participate in daily activities, enjoy traditional meals, and learn about the island’s customs and traditions.

  • Amantani Island: Another island known for its traditional culture, Amantani offers homestays and the opportunity to experience local customs and hospitality. The island has two main peaks, Pachatata and Pachamama, with ancient ruins on top.

  • Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna: Located on the Bolivian side, these islands are significant in Inca mythology and feature ancient ruins and stunning landscapes.

How to Get to Lake Titicaca

  1. From Cusco to Puno :
    • By Bus: The most common and economical way to travel from Cusco to Puno is by bus. Several companies offer daily services, including comfortable tourist buses with amenities like onboard guides, snacks, and stops at various attractions along the way. The journey takes around 7 to 8 hours.
    • By Train: PeruRail operates the luxurious Andean Explorer train, which travels from Cusco to Puno. The journey takes approximately 10 hours and offers a scenic and comfortable experience with gourmet meals and panoramic views.
    • By Plane: There are no direct flights from Cusco to Puno, but you can fly to Juliaca (the nearest airport to Puno) from Lima or Arequipa and then take a bus or taxi to Puno, which is about an hour away.
  2. From Arequipa to Puno:
    • By Bus: Regular bus services operate between Arequipa and Puno, taking around 5 to 6 hours. Some buses offer comfortable seating and scenic views along the route.

  • Altitude Acclimatization: Lake Titicaca is at a high altitude, so it’s essential to acclimatize properly before engaging in strenuous activities. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and consider spending a few days in Cusco or Puno to adjust.
  • Local Culture: Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting the islands. Engage with local communities and consider staying in a homestay for an authentic experience.
  • Bring Cash: There are no ATMs on the islands, so bring enough cash for purchases and any additional expenses. Small denominations are useful for buying crafts and tipping.
