The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world, in southern Peru. In places, it is more than 3,000 metres deep, about twice the depth of the Grand Canyon. Moreover, Andean condors soar along its walls. Around nearby Arequipa, meanwhile, huge volcanoes rise above 5,000 metres.
So, this guide covers the canyon, the condors, treks, volcanoes and practical tips.

The Colca Valley
Long ago, pre-Inca farmers carved thousands of terraces into the slopes. Today, moreover, villages such as Chivay, Yanque and Maca keep their colonial churches and colourful traditions. Also, women wear embroidered hats and dresses typical of the valley.
Then, relax in the La Calera hot springs near Chivay after a day of exploring.
Cruz del Cóndor
At this viewpoint, above all, Andean condors glide on warm air currents rising from the canyon. In fact, the best time to see them is between 8 and 10 in the morning. Also, with a wingspan of about three metres, they are among the largest flying birds on Earth.

Trekking in the Canyon
First, from Cabanaconde, trails drop steeply to the Sangalle oasis at the bottom. Usually, the trek takes two or three days. However, the climb back up is tough at this altitude, so start before dawn.
Volcanoes Around Arequipa
- Misti (5,822 m): The perfect cone above Arequipa. The climb usually takes two days.
- Chachani (6,057 m): Often considered one of the easiest 6,000-metre peaks.
- Pichu Pichu: A long volcanic ridge with several summits.
- Ampato (6,288 m): Here, climbers found the frozen Inca mummy “Juanita” in 1995.
Today, Juanita is displayed at the Museo Santuarios Andinos in Arequipa.

Best Time to Visit Colca
The dry season, from May to October, offers clear skies and good trekking. However, nights are freezing. In contrast, the rainy season from December to March turns the terraces green.
Practical Tips
- Acclimatise: The road crosses a pass at almost 4,900 metres.
- Buy the tourist ticket: It is required to enter the valley.
- Bring layers: Temperatures change quickly between day and night.
- Hire a guide for volcanoes: The climbs are high and demanding.
Getting There
In fact, the canyon lies about 160 km from Arequipa, around four hours by road. So, many tours leave at 3 am to reach the condors in the morning. For more ideas, see the official Peru tourism website.
