The Pyramids of Giza Ancient Wonders to Explore

Sight

Historical

The Pyramids of Giza stand on a desert plateau at the edge of Cairo. Built about 4,500 years ago, they are also the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. Moreover, the Great Sphinx guards them nearby. As a result, the Pyramids of Giza are the most iconic sight in Egypt.

So, this guide covers the three pyramids, the Sphinx, the new museum and practical tips.

The Three Pyramids of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Khufu

The largest pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu, also called Cheops. At first, it rose about 146 metres high. In fact, it remained the tallest human-made structure on Earth for nearly 4,000 years. Once, it was covered in smooth white limestone. Today, however, you see the rough core blocks. Also, a separate ticket lets you climb inside through narrow passages to the King’s Chamber.

The Pyramid of Khafre

Khafre, meanwhile, was Khufu’s son. His pyramid looks taller because it stands on higher ground. Also, some of its original casing stones still cover the top.

The Pyramid of Menkaure

The smallest of the three, it is about 65 metres high. Next to it stand three small pyramids for queens.

The Great Sphinx

The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a king, probably Khafre. In fact, it was carved from the bedrock of the plateau. Its nose is missing, but its gaze remains powerful. Nearby, the Valley Temple of Khafre is built from huge granite blocks.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The huge Grand Egyptian Museum opened near the plateau. Above all, it displays the complete treasures of Tutankhamun. Also, Khufu’s solar boat, once shown next to the Great Pyramid, has moved here. So, plan at least half a day to combine it with the pyramids.

Visitor Tips for the Pyramids of Giza

  • Arrive at opening time: Mornings are cooler and less crowded.
  • Use the official transport: Electric buses now link the main viewpoints on the plateau.
  • Visit the panorama point: It offers the classic photo of all three pyramids together.
  • Agree prices first: For camel or horse rides, agree the full price before starting.
  • Bring water and sun protection: There is almost no shade.

How to Get to the Pyramids of Giza

From central Cairo, the trip takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Ride-hailing apps are also easy and affordable. Alternatively, many hotels and agencies offer guided tours. Also, Sphinx International Airport, west of Cairo, is close to Giza. For more about the heritage site, see the UNESCO page for Memphis and its Necropolis.
