Sight

Created with Fabric.js 5.2.4

Meteora is a group of huge rock pillars in Thessaly, central Greece. On their summits, monks built monasteries from the 14th century onwards. Its name means “suspended in the air”. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most spectacular places in Europe.

So, this guide covers the monasteries, hiking, climbing and practical tips.

The Monasteries of Meteora

First of all, about 24 monasteries once stood here. However, only six are still active and open to visitors.

  • Great Meteoron: Above all, the largest and oldest, with a museum and a grand church.
  • Varlaam: Also known for its frescoes and an old net used to lift supplies.
  • Rousanou: Similarly, a nunnery on a lower rock, with beautiful frescoes.
  • St Nicholas Anapafsas: A small monastery with Cretan-style paintings.
  • Holy Trinity: In fact, it appeared in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.
  • St Stephen’s: Likewise, a nunnery reached by a small bridge, close to the road.

In the past, monks reached the summits by ladders or nets. Today, steps cut into the rock lead to each monastery.

Hiking and Climbing

Old footpaths link the villages with the monasteries. For example, a trail climbs from Kalambaka to Holy Trinity. Also, the sandstone pillars attract rock climbers from around the world. In addition, sunset tours visit the best viewpoints.

Kalambaka and Kastraki

These two villages lie at the foot of the rocks. Here, you can stay in guesthouses. Then, try Greek dishes such as moussaka and grilled meats.

Tips for Visiting Meteora

  • Dress code: Women must wear skirts, and shoulders must be covered, although wraps are often provided.
  • Check closing days: Each monastery closes on a different day.
  • Best time: Spring and autumn are mild and less crowded.
  • Bring cash: Each monastery charges a small entry fee.
