Historical

Cultural

Takayama is a historic town in the mountains of the Hida region, in central Japan. Thanks to its well-preserved Edo-period streets, it is often called “Little Kyoto”. Moreover, it is famous for its festivals, sake breweries and Hida beef. So, it is a perfect stop in the Japanese Alps.

This guide covers the old town, museums, festivals, food and practical tips.

The Old Town of Takayama

The Sanmachi Suji district is lined with dark wooden merchant houses. Here, sake breweries hang balls of cedar leaves, called sugidama, above their doors. Also, small shops sell crafts and local snacks.

Takayama Jinya

This building was the local government office during the Edo period. In fact, it is the only one of its kind still standing in Japan. Inside, you see tatami rooms, a rice storehouse and a garden.

Hida Folk Village

This open-air museum displays old thatched farmhouses moved from the region. As a result, you can see how mountain families lived. Also, craft demonstrations take place in some houses.

The Takayama Festival

Twice a year, in mid-April and early October, ornate floats parade through the streets. Moreover, some floats have mechanical puppets. In fact, the festival is listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Between festivals, the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall shows some floats.

Morning Markets

Every morning, stalls open along the Miyagawa River and in front of the Jinya. For example, farmers sell vegetables, pickles and crafts. Then, try a Hida beef skewer.

Food and Sake

Hida beef is rich and marbled, similar to Kobe beef. Also, many breweries offer sake tastings. In addition, try hoba miso, miso grilled on a magnolia leaf.

Nature Nearby

Shiroyama Park, on a hill, has forest trails and castle ruins. Further away, moreover, the Northern Alps offer great views.

Practical Tips

  • Stay in a ryokan: Enjoy a traditional inn with hot baths and dinner.
  • Book early for festivals: Rooms sell out months ahead.
  • Combine with Shirakawa-go: Buses reach this UNESCO village in about one hour.
