Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, is one of the most famous sights in Kyoto. Its top two floors are covered in gold leaf. On calm days, therefore, the pavilion shines on the still water of the Mirror Pond. Moreover, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Historic Kyoto.
So, this guide covers its history, what to see, tips and how to get there.

History of Kinkaku-ji
The pavilion was built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. After his death, it became a Zen temple, officially called Rokuon-ji. However, in 1950, a young monk set fire to the building. Then, it was rebuilt in 1955, and its gold leaf was renewed in the 1980s.
What to See at Kinkaku-ji
The Golden Pavilion
Each of the three floors has a different style. For example, the ground floor follows palace architecture, while the top floor is a Zen hall. Also, a golden phoenix stands on the roof. However, visitors cannot enter the pavilion.
The Mirror Pond
The pond, Kyōko-chi, is dotted with small islands and pine trees. In fact, the best photo spot is right at the start of the path.
Garden and Tea House
Then, the path winds through a moss garden, past small ponds and statues. Here, visitors throw coins for good luck. Near the exit, moreover, the Sekka-tei tea house is a fine example of Edo-period design.
