Kitzbühel, Iconic Alpine Resort

Nature

Activity

Kitzbühel is one of the most famous alpine resorts in Austria. Specifically, it lies in the Tyrolean Alps, between the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Hahnenkamm. Moreover, its medieval town centre is full of colourful houses, cafés and boutiques. Moreover, it is a year-round destination, not just a ski resort.

This guide covers skiing, summer activities, the old town, events and practical tips.

Skiing in Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel is a legend in the ski world. Every January, it hosts the Hahnenkamm races on the Streif. In fact, the Streif is often called the most dangerous downhill course on the World Cup. As a result, tens of thousands of fans come to watch.

  • Ski area: More than 230 km of slopes cover runs for all levels. Also, modern lifts link the town to several mountains.
  • The Streif: When it is not prepared for racing, you can ski a version of the famous course yourself.
  • Freeride: Experienced skiers can explore off-piste terrain with a local guide.

Summer in Kitzbühel

When the snow melts, the mountains turn green. Then, hundreds of kilometres of trails open for hikers. For example, the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Hahnenkamm both offer superb views of the Wilder Kaiser range. Also, mountain bikers find trails for every level.

Golfers can also choose between several scenic courses. In addition, the nearby Schwarzsee lake is perfect for swimming on warm days.

Exploring Kitzbühel Old Town

The old town is compact and car-free in parts. Its pastel facades, though, house designer shops, bakeries and restaurants. Meanwhile, the churches of St. Andreas and Our Lady stand side by side on a small hill. So, it is lovely for an evening walk.

For dinner, try Tyrolean dishes like Käsespätzle, cheese noodles with crispy onions. Kitzbühel also has several gourmet restaurants.

Après-Ski and Nightlife

Kitzbühel’s après-ski is famous. For instance, bars at the foot of the Hahnenkamm fill up as soon as the lifts close. Later, the old town’s pubs and clubs take over. For a more elegant evening, the casino is also in town.

Events and Festivals

  • Hahnenkamm Races: The highlight of winter, usually in late January.
  • Kitzbühel Alpine Rally: Classic cars drive through the mountains in early summer.
  • Tennis tournament: In summer, Kitzbühel hosts an international ATP tennis event.

Wellness and Spas

After a day outdoors, relax in the Aquarena, the town’s indoor pool and sauna centre. Also, many hotels have large spas with pools and mountain views.

Tips for Visiting Kitzbühel

  • Book early for race week: Hotels fill up months before the Hahnenkamm. Therefore, plan ahead.
  • Use the guest card: Many hotels give a card with free buses and discounts.
  • Visit in early summer: June offers green meadows, wildflowers and fewer visitors.

How to Get There

Innsbruck and Salzburg airports are about an hour and a half away by car. Munich, however, is a little further. Also, trains stop in the town centre. For events and trail maps, see the official Kitzbühel tourism website.
