Teotihuacan is an ancient city about 50 km northeast of Mexico City, in Mexico. At its peak, around 450 AD, it was one of the largest cities in the world. Later, the Aztecs found it in ruins and named it “the place where the gods were created”. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

So, this guide covers the pyramids, the main avenue, temples and practical tips.

The Pyramids of Teotihuacan

Pyramid of the Sun

First, this is the largest building on the site, about 65 metres high. In fact, it is one of the largest pyramids in the world. However, climbing it is no longer allowed, to protect the structure.

Pyramid of the Moon

Meanwhile, it stands at the northern end of the main avenue. Although smaller, it was the stage for important ceremonies. Also, the plaza in front of it is impressive.

The Avenue of the Dead

This wide avenue runs for about 2 km through the city. Along it, temples, palaces and platforms line the way. So, walk it slowly to understand the layout.

Temples and Palaces of Teotihuacan

Temple of the Feathered Serpent

In the Ciudadela, this temple shows carved heads of the feathered serpent. In fact, the carvings still keep traces of their original colours.

Palace of Quetzalpapalotl

Similarly, this elite residence has carved pillars and a fine courtyard. Nearby, murals show jaguars and shells.

Hot Air Balloons

At sunrise, hot air balloons float over the pyramids. As a result, you get a unique view of the whole site. However, book with a licensed operator.
